The United States has approved a potential $9 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia involving advanced Patriot interceptor missiles and associated defense equipment, according to a statement released by the Pentagon on Friday.
The approval was granted by the US State Department following a formal request from Riyadh to purchase 730 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) interceptors. These missiles are designed to strengthen air and missile defense systems by countering ballistic and cruise missile threats, as well as hostile aircraft.
Lockheed Martin Corporation has been identified as the principal contractor for the proposed sale. The US defense manufacturer is responsible for producing the PAC-3 MSE missiles, which represent one of the most advanced variants in the Patriot missile defense family.
US officials say the proposed sale is intended to enhance Saudi Arabia’s defensive capabilities and contribute to regional stability. The Pentagon noted that the transaction would support a key US partner in the Middle East while maintaining the military balance in the region. The deal is also expected to improve Saudi Arabia’s ability to protect critical infrastructure and population centers from potential aerial threats.
As with all foreign military sales, the agreement still requires final approval from the US Congress. However, such sales are rarely blocked, particularly when they involve longstanding security partners.
The announcement comes amid continued tensions in the Middle East, where missile and drone attacks have become an increasing concern for regional governments. If finalized, the deal would mark one of the largest US arms sales to Saudi Arabia in recent years, reinforcing defense ties between Washington and Riyadh.
