ISLAMABAD, France has appointed senior career diplomat Jean-Noël Poirier as its new ambassador to Pakistan, marking the beginning of a new chapter in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
According to official information, Jean-Noël Poirier is currently serving as the French Consul General in Greenland and will succeed Ambassador Nicolas Galey, who is concluding a diplomatic tenure of more than four and a half years in Pakistan.
Ambassador Nicolas Galey’s tenure was marked by significant progress in political, economic, educational, and cultural cooperation between Pakistan and France.
One of the most notable achievements during his mission was the remarkable increase in the number of Pakistani students pursuing higher education in France. The figure rose from around 200 students at the beginning of his tenure to more than 7,000, reflecting strengthened educational collaboration between the two countries.
France also expanded its support for Pakistan’s development initiatives during Ambassador Galey’s tenure. The French government worked to encourage investment, strengthen commercial partnerships, and contributed €50 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in Pakistan.

In addition to economic and educational cooperation, Ambassador Galey actively promoted cultural diplomacy through art exhibitions, cultural exchanges, and initiatives aimed at enhancing mutual understanding between the people of Pakistan and France.
Throughout his diplomatic mission, he also appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and reiterated France’s commitment to cooperation on climate action, sustainable development, and international peace efforts.
The appointment of Jean-Noël Poirier is expected to ensure continuity in the growing partnership between Pakistan and France while opening new opportunities for cooperation in trade, education, investment, culture, and regional affairs.
