ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) has signed a landmark contract for the installation of a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) on Pakistani fishing vessels, marking a significant step toward improving maritime safety, fisheries management, and regulatory oversight.
The agreement aims to introduce modern tracking technology across Pakistan’s fishing fleet, enabling authorities to monitor vessel movements in real time while enhancing maritime security and ensuring compliance with national and international fishing regulations.
The Vessel Monitoring System is expected to improve the safety of fishermen operating at sea by providing continuous location tracking, facilitating emergency response, and reducing the risks associated with illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.
Officials said the initiative would strengthen Pakistan’s maritime governance, support sustainable fisheries management, and help protect the country’s marine resources while improving coordination between maritime authorities and the fishing community.
The project also reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to modernize its maritime sector through the adoption of advanced technology and enhanced surveillance capabilities.
