WASHINGTON: The United States, Iran and Oman are reportedly close to an interim agreement aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring commercial shipping.

According to US media reports, the proposed agreement could also help revive a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran and create conditions for renewed talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran Awaits Final Approval

Iranian negotiators are reportedly awaiting final approval from the country’s leadership.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has agreed in principle to the proposed arrangement, but further approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council is still required.

Therefore, the agreement has not yet been finalized.

US Could Lift Blockade on Iranian Ports

US officials said Washington could lift its blockade of Iranian ports once an agreement is reached and commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz resumes.

However, US measures would depend on Iran fulfilling its commitments under the agreement.

60-Day Interim Arrangement Proposed

The proposed plan includes a 60-day interim arrangement between Iran and Oman, with the possibility of an extension.

Under the proposal:

  • Ships entering the Gulf would use a northern route through Iranian waters.
  • Ships leaving the Gulf toward the Arabian Sea would use a southern route through Omani waters.
  • No tolls or fees would be charged during the 60-day period.
  • Iran and Oman would work to clear naval mines from the central route within 30 days.
  • Once cleared, the central route could be reopened for both inbound and outbound shipping.

The interim arrangement could eventually lead to a permanent agreement between Iran and Oman on maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.

Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia Join Diplomatic Efforts

Reports indicate that Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have also been involved in diplomatic efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

Their involvement is aimed at reducing tensions and helping restore the security of one of the world’s most important commercial shipping routes.

Strait of Hormuz Deal Could Affect Global Energy Markets

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global oil and gas shipments. Any prolonged disruption could put further pressure on energy supplies and prices.

If the proposed Strait of Hormuz deal is finalized and shipping returns to normal, it could ease pressure on global energy markets and create a broader opening for US-Iran diplomatic talks.

However, the agreement still requires final approval and implementation by the parties involved.
