Ukrainian Churches Call for Worldwide Prayer for Ukraine on Independence Day

KYIV, — The Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations has called on churches around the world to join a Worldwide Prayer for Ukraine on August 24.

The date also marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The council said the prayer will show solidarity with the people of Ukraine and support their hopes for peace and freedom.

The appeal says the prayer will express support for Ukraine while also highlighting freedom, human dignity, peace and the right of people to decide their own future.

World Council of Churches Supports Prayer

World Council of Churches (WCC) General Secretary Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay has invited WCC member churches and people around the world to take part in the prayer.

Pillay said prayer can bring people together in hope during the war.

He also called for an end to the pain and suffering of innocent people in Ukraine. He said the WCC continues to stand with Ukrainian faith communities and the people of the country.

WCC Delegation Visited Ukraine

A WCC delegation visited Ukraine from July 14 to 17.

During the visit, the delegation met religious leaders from different churches and faith groups. It also saw their work with communities affected by the war.

The WCC said religious leaders continue to serve people across Ukraine during the conflict.

Pillay said the WCC will continue to support Ukrainian faith communities and the wider population. He also called for an end to the war and a return to peace.

Prayer to Focus on Peace and Hope

The Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations said the August 24 prayer will carry a wider message of peace and solidarity.

The council hopes churches in different countries will join the initiative. It also wants the prayer to draw attention to the human cost of the war and the need to protect peace, freedom and human dignity.
