Bangladesh has made clear that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not visit India until New Delhi hands over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The issue has added to tensions between Bangladesh and India. Hasina fled to India after the 2024 mass uprising that ended her long rule.
Bangladeshi officials have repeatedly asked India to extradite the former prime minister. However, India says it is reviewing the request under its legal process.
Bangladesh Seeks a Favorable Environment
Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry official A.K.M. Shahid Al Karim rejected media speculation about a possible visit by Tarique Rahman to India next week.
Speaking to reporters, he said conditions must first become favorable for such a visit.

“We believe that a conducive environment needs to be created first for this visit,” the official said, according to the foreign news agency report.
He added that Bangladesh had urged Indian authorities to speed up efforts to hand over Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives wanted by Bangladesh.
Sheikh Hasina Faces Death Sentence
Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India following the 2024 uprising.
A Bangladeshi court later convicted her of crimes against humanity and sentenced her to death, according to the source.
The Bangladeshi government has since made several formal requests to India for her extradition.
The issue has become a major point of tension between Dhaka and New Delhi.

India has not agreed to hand over Sheikh Hasina.
