TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Iran advanced its recent agreement with the United States from a position of strength and refused to surrender to its enemies.
Speaking at an event in Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran reached the peace memorandum with Washington while maintaining its dignity and strength.
He said Iranian officials followed principles set by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei during the negotiations.
Pezeshkian Defends US-Iran Agreement
Pezeshkian said experts prepared the memorandum after detailed negotiations with the United States.
Pakistan played a key mediation role in the process. The two sides electronically signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 18, 2026, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif endorsing it as mediator.

60-Day Deadline
According to the terms reported for the memorandum, Iran and the United States agreed to negotiate a final agreement within a maximum period of 60 days. The deadline could also be extended by mutual consent.
The 60-day period has now reached its scheduled end. However, recent reports indicate that Washington and Tehran have discussed extending the ceasefire linked to the Islamabad memorandum.
Meanwhile, the two sides have continued to exchange messages through mediators, although direct negotiations remain uncertain.
Pakistan’s Role in the Peace Process
Pakistan played a central role in bringing Iran and the United States to the memorandum.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said technical-level talks would follow the agreement, with representatives from Iran and the United States joining mediators from Pakistan and Qatar.
Pezeshkian previously thanked Pakistan for its role in the mediation process. He also expressed support for strengthening relations between Tehran and Islamabad.
Regional Tensions Remain
Despite the memorandum, tensions between Iran and the United States remain high.
The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major point of contention. Iran has repeatedly stressed its position over the strategic waterway, while Washington has increased economic and military pressure on Tehran.
