Aden: Yemen’s Houthi forces have advanced toward the strategic Red Sea port city of Al-Mokha as fighting with Saudi-backed government forces intensifies along the country’s western coast.
The advance has brought the Houthis closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime routes. Reuters reported that Houthi forces were nearing control of key coastal areas, including Al-Mokha and Dhubab.
At the same time, Yemen’s Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Taher Al-Aqili, faced a separate security incident during a visit to Al-Dhalea Governorate.
Defense Minister’s Convoy Surrounded
According to Yemen Monitor, armed men blocked and surrounded Al-Aqili’s convoy during his inspection tour of the area.
The incident later developed into clashes between the minister’s escort and gunmen believed to be loyal to the dissolved Southern Transitional Council.
Reports of the incident have circulated alongside claims that the minister was taken hostage. However, available reporting confirms that his convoy was blocked and besieged, but does not independently establish that Al-Aqili himself was captured.
Earlier during the visit, Al-Aqili inspected military positions and received briefings on the situation along the front lines.
He also urged troops to maintain high readiness and military discipline while continuing operations against the Houthis.
Houthis Move Closer to Bab el-Mandeb
Meanwhile, Houthi forces have made significant gains along Yemen’s western coast.
Reuters reported that the group was moving closer to control of Al-Mokha and Dhubab, both of which lie near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The developments have raised concerns over the security of one of the main shipping routes between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The Associated Press also reported that Houthi fighters had entered parts of Al-Mokha, although the extent of their control was still developing.
The situation has increased fears that Yemen could return to a wider conflict after years of relative calm.
Fighting Threatens Key Shipping Route
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. It is a major route for international trade and energy shipments.
Therefore, any sustained Houthi advance along the western coast could create additional risks for commercial shipping.
The latest escalation comes as regional tensions remain high because of the wider conflict involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and other regional powers.
