JEDDAH, The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has highlighted the role of sport in promoting peace and empowering young people.
The OIC General Secretariat took part in the 15th General Assembly of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Association (ISSA) on Saturday.
The meeting took place on September 12 in Taif. National Olympic committees from OIC member states took part in the event.
The meeting was held at the invitation of Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, President of the ISSA.
OIC Praises Saudi Support
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal opened the meeting with an address.
An OIC speech followed on behalf of Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.
Ambassador Dr. Tarig Ali Bakheet, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, delivered the speech.
The OIC Secretary-General thanked Saudi Arabia’s leadership for its continued support.
He also praised the Kingdom’s support for both the OIC and the ISSA.
Sport as a Tool for Peace
The Secretary-General said sport now goes beyond competition.
He described sport as a common language that can promote peace and understanding.
He also called sport a useful tool for empowering young people.
Youth remains a key priority for the OIC, he said.
In addition, he praised the ISSA for its role since its creation.
He highlighted the success of the Islamic Solidarity Games.
The games have helped bring young people from Muslim countries together, he said.
They promote brotherhood and fair competition among young athletes.
New ISSA Board to Serve From 2026 to 2029
The General Assembly also elected a new ISSA Board of Directors for the 2026–2029 term.
The OIC Secretary-General described the election as an important step for the Association.
He said the new board can improve performance and build on past achievements.
He also expressed confidence in the new board’s ability to continue the ISSA’s vision.
Finally, the OIC reaffirmed its strong support for its partnership with the Association.
The General Secretariat also pledged to support the partnership and expand cooperation in the coming years.
