NEW YORK, — G7 foreign ministers have called on Iran to end its military support for Yemen’s Houthi movement.
The ministers met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. They also called on the Houthis to stop their military operations and attacks on Saudi Arabia.
G7 Calls for End to Houthi Attacks
In a joint statement, the G7 ministers condemned what they described as continued Houthi strikes in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia.
They urged the Houthis to immediately stop all military actions. The ministers also called for an end to threats and attacks against civilian shipping.
According to the statement, such attacks pose risks to international trade and regional stability.
Call for Political Process
The G7 also urged the Houthis to return to the political process in good faith.
Meanwhile, the ministers called on Iran to end its arming of and support for the Houthi movement. They linked Iranian support to what they described as a dangerous pattern of regional escalation.
The statement comes as fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has intensified in recent days.
Concern Over Regional Security
The G7 ministers said the continued attacks could affect international trade and wider regional security.
They also stressed the need to protect civilian shipping and major maritime routes.
The latest G7 statement comes amid wider tensions in the Middle East. The ministers used their UNGA meeting to address the Houthi attacks, Iran’s support for the group and the need for a return to political dialogue.
