The United Arab Emirates has suspended flights operated by Iranian airlines amid new US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector.
Iranian state media reported on September 24 that all flights by Iranian airlines to the UAE had been cancelled since midnight.
The move has affected flights between Iran and the UAE, including services to Dubai. An Iran Airtour flight from Tehran to Dubai was also cancelled shortly before departure after passengers had received tickets.
US Sanctions Put Pressure on Iranian Airlines
The disruption follows a new US sanctions campaign against Iran’s aviation industry.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iranian airlines would face severe restrictions from September 23.
He warned foreign companies against providing key services to Iranian carriers.
These services include fuel, landing facilities and ticket sales. Companies that continue such activities could face exclusion from the US dollar financial system, Bessent said.
The US Treasury had already sanctioned 36 targets linked to Iran’s aviation sector on September 8. The action included 27 Iranian airlines that had not previously faced US sanctions.
International Flights Face Wider Disruption
The UAE is not the only country affected by the new restrictions.
Iranian airlines have cancelled or suspended several international routes. These include services to Baghdad, Muscat, Qatar, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
However, some international flights have continued. Routes to China and some other destinations were still operating after the sanctions took effect.
Reports also indicate that some flights to Turkey and other destinations remained available.
The situation remains fluid. Airlines and airports are reviewing whether they can continue providing services to Iranian carriers without facing US sanctions.
Impact on Passengers
The restrictions are making international travel more difficult for Iranian passengers.
Dubai is a major regional travel hub. Iranian travellers often use the UAE for business, onward connections and international travel.
The suspension could therefore affect passengers beyond direct Iran-UAE routes.
Iran’s aviation sector was already under pressure from years of sanctions. The latest measures are adding further restrictions on fuel, airport services, ticketing and other support.
For now, the availability of Iranian international flights depends on the decisions of foreign airports, service providers and governments.
