Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the United States and Iran to return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and resume talks to resolve their differences.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday.
According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, Xi called for a return to dialogue and negotiations over the conflict in the Middle East.
Xi Calls for Return to Dialogue
Xi said China has consistently supported respect for the sovereignty and security of all countries.
He said Beijing has also played a constructive role in reducing tensions and encouraging negotiations between the relevant parties.
The Chinese president urged the United States and Iran to return to the path of dialogue as soon as possible.
He also said China supports both countries returning to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Hope for Comprehensive US-Iran Agreement
Xi expressed hope that Washington and Tehran would eventually reach a comprehensive agreement.
He said such an agreement should address the nuclear issue as well as other outstanding matters.
Xi also expressed hope that the two countries could achieve peace at an early date.
The call comes amid continued tensions between the United States and Iran. China has previously urged both sides to exercise restraint and resume substantive negotiations.
Trump and Xi Meet at White House
Trump hosted Xi at the White House during the Chinese president’s September 23–25 visit to the United States.
The meeting covered major bilateral and international issues. These included trade, artificial intelligence and regional conflicts.
Xi’s latest comments put the US-Iran conflict among the key international issues discussed during the summit.
The Islamabad Memorandum was signed in June 2026 following diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari welcomed the agreement and described it as an important step toward ending the conflict.
