WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran’s situation was “very bad” and that he did not know whether Tehran was ready to give up.

Trump made the remarks after meeting artificial intelligence leaders at the White House. He also discussed the US position in the global AI race and the need to maintain American leadership.

“I don’t know if they are going to give up yet, but they’ll give up,” Trump told reporters. He added that Iran was doing “very poorly.”

Trump Highlights US AI Leadership

During the White House meeting, Trump said the United States has a major advantage in artificial intelligence.

He said the administration wants to maintain that lead as AI development expands.

Major technology companies also agreed to voluntary measures aimed at improving AI safety. The agreement includes internal controls and independent audits of AI systems.

Trump described the document as a form of protection. He also said the administration was considering the creation of a committee to oversee AI safety.

According to Reuters, Trump is considering a 10-member board to monitor AI safety. He did not announce the members of the proposed board.

Data Centers Discussed

The meeting also covered the expansion of data centers across the United States.

Trump said officials discussed possible locations for new data centers. He argued that communities hosting these facilities could receive major financial benefits.

He also said technology companies would make significant contributions to local communities as data center construction expands.

Data centers provide the computing power needed to train and operate advanced AI systems. However, their rapid growth has also raised concerns about electricity demand, utility costs and other local impacts.

AI Companies Back Voluntary Oversight

Executives from major technology companies signed the voluntary agreement during the White House meeting.

The participating companies committed to stronger internal safeguards and independent assessments. They also agreed to work to prevent AI systems from accessing or interfering with technical systems in unintended ways.

The agreement does not create a federal regulatory system. Instead, it relies on voluntary industry measures, with the possibility that some of them could later become part of laws or regulations.
