Riyadh: The Saudi-led coalition says it intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi group toward Saudi Arabia on Thursday.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki said one missile was launched toward Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia. Saudi air defense systems intercepted and destroyed the missile, according to the statement.
The Houthis also launched two ballistic missiles toward Riyadh, Al-Malki said. Saudi defense systems intercepted and destroyed both missiles before they could reach their targets.
Saudi Forces Say Missile Threat Was Contained
Al-Malki said Saudi defense systems responded to the incoming missiles and contained the threat.
The latest interceptions came amid renewed Houthi attacks and growing military tensions between the group and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.
The Houthis separately claimed responsibility for a ballistic missile attack targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Thursday. Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm that the missile struck the airport.
Saudi civil defense officials, however, said debris from an intercepted missile caused material damage to a kindergarten and a medical clinic in Riyadh. No casualties were reported in that incident.
Growing Tensions Around Saudi Airports
The latest missile launches followed attacks claimed by the Houthis against Saudi airports earlier this week.
Saudi officials said attacks on Riyadh and Abha airports on Wednesday killed three people and injured 36 others. The renewed attacks have also disrupted air travel, with several international airlines suspending or reducing flights to Riyadh.
The escalation has raised fresh concerns about security in Saudi Arabia and the wider impact of the Yemen conflict on regional travel and energy markets.
