Yemen’s Houthi movement fired missiles at the presidential palace complex in the southern city of Aden on Thursday, killing two security guards, two government officials told Reuters.
Prime Minister and cabinet members who were inside the Maashiq presidential palace complex escaped unharmed, Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani said.
According to the minister, the Houthis fired five missiles at the complex. However, Reuters could not independently verify all claims surrounding the attack.
Houthis Say They Targeted Saudi Military Headquarters
The Houthi-run Saba news agency reported that the group targeted a military operations headquarters operated by Saudi officers inside the complex. It also said the attack targeted weapons depots.
Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesperson, said the strike targeted what he described as a Saudi military operations headquarters in Aden.
He added that the attack formed part of the group’s declared policy of targeting Saudi military build-ups wherever they are.
However, Reuters could not independently verify the Houthi claims about the targets.
Explosions Heard Near Presidential Palace
Three witnesses had earlier told Reuters that they heard loud explosions near the presidential palace complex.
The attack highlights the continuing security challenges facing Yemen’s internationally recognised government. It also comes amid tensions involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
