SOFIA: Bulgaria’s parliament has approved the use of one of the country’s air bases by the United States to support potential military operations in the Middle East, marking a significant step in NATO cooperation amid heightened regional tensions.
According to international media reports, the government’s proposal was passed with 136 votes in favor, while 13 lawmakers voted against and two abstained.
The move follows a formal request submitted by the United States last Friday seeking permission to use the Bulgarian air base. The Bulgarian government subsequently presented the proposal to parliament, where it secured overwhelming support.
Under the approved agreement, the United States will be allowed to deploy up to eight KC-135 aerial refueling tanker aircraft and approximately 250 military personnel at the designated air base.
The tanker aircraft are expected to provide aerial refueling and logistical support for US air operations in the Middle East, enhancing operational readiness and regional mobility.

During the parliamentary debate, several lawmakers expressed concern that allowing US forces to use Bulgarian territory could draw the country into a potential military confrontation involving Iran, exposing Bulgaria to diplomatic and security risks.
The Bulgarian government dismissed those concerns, emphasizing that the arrangement is part of the country’s commitments as a NATO ally and is intended solely to provide logistical support to allied forces rather than participate directly in military operations.
The decision comes as US President Donald Trump continues to adopt a hardline stance toward Iran and has recently issued renewed warnings of possible military action. Meanwhile, some European Union member states have reportedly declined to allow the United States to use their military facilities for operations related to Iran, a position that has drawn criticism from Trump.
