DAMASCUS, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has said Syria is pursuing a security agreement with Israel with the involvement of several international partners, suggesting that a successful arrangement could open the door to broader peace efforts in the region.
In an interview with Al Jazeera on Sunday, Sharaa said ongoing diplomatic efforts are focused on reaching a security framework that could help reduce tensions while protecting Syria’s national interests.
The Syrian president said any future agreement would not compromise Syria’s claim to the Golan Heights, a strategic territory captured by Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and later annexed in a move that remains unrecognized by much of the international community.
According to Sharaa, progress on a security deal could create momentum for a more comprehensive peace process between the two countries, although he did not disclose which nations are participating in the negotiations or provide details about the proposed framework.
The remarks come amid renewed diplomatic activity across the Middle East as regional and international actors seek to contain escalating conflicts and encourage dialogue between long-time rivals.
