MANILA, The United States, Japan, and the Philippines have concluded a major five-day joint military exercise in the South China Sea, underscoring their growing security cooperation as tensions with China continue to rise following a series of maritime confrontations in disputed waters.
The exercises, held from July 21 to 25, involved warships, coast guard vessels, surveillance aircraft, and fighter jets, with the objective of improving operational coordination and interoperability among the three allies, the Philippine military said on Sunday.
The latest drills come amid renewed diplomatic friction between Manila and Beijing, with both sides accusing each other of aggressive actions during separate incidents in the contested South China Sea.
According to the Philippine military, the exercises highlighted the “enduring partnership” among the three countries in promoting peace, stability, and security across the Indo-Pacific region. Officials did not disclose the exact location of the operations.
The military drills began one day after the Philippines accused Chinese Coast Guard personnel of striking a Filipino sailor with a baton near the Second Thomas Shoal. China rejected the allegation, claiming that Philippine vessels initiated the confrontation and rammed Chinese boats.
The Philippine Coast Guard also alleged that Chinese vessels fired water cannons at Philippine government ships near Scarborough Shoal on both Thursday and Friday. Beijing said it had taken what it described as “lawful measures” after Philippine vessels repeatedly entered waters claimed by China.
On Saturday, the Philippines’ newly appointed Armed Forces Chief of Staff, General Antonio Nafarrete, visited the Philippine-controlled Thitu Island in the disputed Spratly Islands, approximately 480 kilometers (300 miles) west of Palawan province. During the visit, he praised troops stationed on the island for safeguarding the outpost and pledged continued support to strengthen their operational capabilities.
The South China Sea remains one of the world’s most contested maritime regions. China claims sovereignty over almost the entire waterway despite a 2016 international arbitration ruling that invalidated Beijing’s expansive territorial claims—a decision China continues to reject.
The latest military exercises are expected to reinforce defense cooperation among Washington, Tokyo, and Manila while further highlighting the strategic competition unfolding in the Indo-Pacific.
