SEOUL, — North Korea has firmly rejected renewed international calls for denuclearization, with senior official Kim Yo Jong declaring that the country’s status as a nuclear weapons state is final, irreversible, and protected by its constitution.
According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Kim Yo Jong — the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a senior official in the Workers’ Party of Korea — made the remarks in response to a statement issued by the chair of the ASEAN Regional Forum, which urged the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Kim said North Korea is a responsible nuclear state that contributes to maintaining the regional balance of power and preserving peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and across Northeast Asia.
She stressed that Pyongyang’s nuclear status is permanent and non-negotiable, adding that no international declaration lacking legal authority could alter a position already enshrined in the country’s constitution.
Kim also dismissed repeated calls from the United States and its allies for North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program, describing the demand as a “strategic miscalculation” and an “obsolete fantasy.”

She reiterated that North Korea’s nuclear deterrent remains the country’s most reliable shield for protecting its sovereignty, safeguarding its political system, and ensuring national security.
The latest comments underscore Pyongyang’s continued refusal to engage in any negotiations aimed at dismantling its nuclear arsenal, despite persistent international pressure and regional diplomatic efforts.
