BEIRUT, — Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has expressed willingness to meet Syria’s new leadership, marking a significant shift in the group’s position after years of supporting former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Speaking in a televised address, Qassem said Hezbollah seeks positive and cooperative relations with Syria. He added that he has no objection to holding an official meeting if both sides agree at the appropriate time.
“We want brotherly and constructive relations with Syria. If both parties believe the time is right, a public meeting can take place,” Qassem said.
Major Shift in Hezbollah’s Position
This is the first time Hezbollah’s leadership has publicly supported direct engagement with Syria’s current government.
The statement reflects a notable policy change following the political transformation in Damascus after the new Syrian administration took office in December 2024.
