US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea.
Trump linked the decision to Seoul’s refusal to join US efforts to denuclearize Iran. He also criticized the cost of the exercises and their impact on relations with North Korea.
Trump Says South Korea Rejected Iran Request
Trump said he recently asked the South Korean president to join the US effort against Iran.
According to Trump, the South Korean leader declined the request.
The US president expressed his displeasure over Seoul’s decision. He then connected the issue to Washington’s military exercises with South Korea.

Pentagon Ordered to Reduce Military Drills
Trump said he had instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce the joint exercises.
However, he acknowledged that the United States could not cancel the upcoming drills completely because preparations had already begun.
The exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, are scheduled for August 17 to August 27.
Around 18,000 South Korean troops are expected to take part in the drills. The exercises focus on military readiness and responses to potential threats from North Korea.
Trump Criticizes Cost of Exercises
Trump said the joint exercises cost too much.
He also argued that the drills send an inappropriate and hostile message to North Korea.
At the same time, Trump highlighted his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
He said Kim had remained respectful and had not posed a threat to the United States during his presidency.

The decision marks a significant shift in Washington’s approach to joint military training with Seoul.
