MOSCOW: Russia has conducted a test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during military drills, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Russian forces launched the solid-fuel missile from a mobile launcher at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region.

The Defense Ministry said the missile test was successful.

Missile Flew More Than 6,700 Kilometers

Before the launch, Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces deployed a mobile launcher unit in a remote area.

The missile then flew toward a test target at the Kura test site on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The target lies more than 6,700 kilometers from the launch area.

Russian officials said the test aimed to check the missile system’s flight and technical performance.

They said the missile completed its planned flight and hit the designated target.

The Defense Ministry also said the missile maintained a stable flight path throughout the test.

Russia Gives Few Details About New Missile

Russia did not reveal the name or full specifications of the missile used in the test.

The ministry also did not say whether the missile represents a new strategic system or an updated version of an existing weapon.

However, Russia has continued to test its strategic missile systems as part of military exercises.

In mid-May, Russian forces also tested the RS-24 Yars missile system during strategic missile drills.

Test Comes Amid Rising Tensions

The latest launch comes amid continued tensions between Russia and Western countries over the war in Ukraine.

Unconfirmed reports earlier this week said Ukrainian drones may have targeted Russia’s Plesetsk military space facility.

Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed that the reported drone operation caused significant damage to the site.

The Plesetsk Cosmodrome remains an important launch facility for Russia’s military space and missile programs.

Russia Highlights Missile Capabilities

The Russian Defense Ministry released video footage showing the missile launch from a forested location.

The footage showed a mobile launcher preparing for the launch before the missile rose into the sky.

Russia regularly conducts missile tests to check the performance of its strategic weapons.

The latest test also highlights Moscow’s continued focus on maintaining its long-range missile forces.
