BISHKEK: Pakistan has assumed the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for 2026–27.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar discussed Pakistan’s priorities for the chairmanship with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev in Bishkek.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Dar also outlined Islamabad’s strategy for advancing the organisation’s agenda during its chairmanship.
SCO Secretary-General Congratulates Pakistan
The SCO secretary-general congratulated Pakistan on taking over the chairmanship.
During the meeting, Dar briefed him on Pakistan’s planned priorities and approach. In response, the secretary-general assured Pakistan of his full support.

The two sides also agreed to maintain close coordination throughout Pakistan’s chairmanship.
Pakistan and SCO Secretariat Agree on Cooperation
Pakistan and the SCO Secretariat agreed to continue close contact during the chairmanship period.
Both sides also discussed joint efforts to advance the organisation’s priorities. They agreed that regular coordination would help support Pakistan’s work within the SCO.
Meanwhile, Pakistan plans to work closely with the SCO Secretariat throughout the year.
Senior Officials Attend Meeting
Foreign Secretary Amina Baloch and Pakistan’s National Coordinator for the SCO, Muhammad Faisal, also attended the meeting.
Their participation highlighted Pakistan’s focus on close coordination with the SCO Secretariat.
The meeting also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation within the organisation.
Pakistan to Advance SCO Priorities
Pakistan will now lead the SCO’s work as chair for the 2026–27 period.
During its tenure, Islamabad will work with member states and the SCO Secretariat to advance agreed priorities.

The government has also stressed the importance of collective efforts, coordination and cooperation among SCO members.
Pakistan’s chairmanship is expected to provide an opportunity to promote greater regional cooperation through the organisation.
