The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has passed a resolution condemning remarks attributed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz about terrorism and neighbouring provinces.
The resolution calls on the federal government to consider action against Maryam Nawaz under Article 6 of Pakistan’s Constitution.
The resolution was presented by KP Law Minister Aftab Alam during the assembly session. It passed by a majority vote.
KP Lawmakers Criticize Maryam Nawaz
The debate began after the provincial government sought permission to suspend the regular agenda.
Lawmakers from the ruling side accused Maryam Nawaz of making irresponsible and insulting remarks about Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
They argued that terrorism remains a national challenge. They said it should not be linked to one province or political party.
KP lawmakers also highlighted the sacrifices made by residents, police and security forces in the fight against terrorism.
The resolution described Maryam Nawaz’s remarks as contrary to facts and driven by political interests. It said such statements could create mistrust between Pakistan’s provinces.
Opposition Rejects Criticism
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawmakers rejected the accusations against Maryam Nawaz.
PML-N member Amna Sardar said the chief minister had not specifically referred to Pashtuns in her remarks. She said the debate had turned a statement about terrorism into a broader political controversy.
She also condemned terrorism and acknowledged the sacrifices made by people and security personnel across Pakistan.
The opposition argued that the remarks had been taken out of context.
Resolution Calls for Article 6 Proceedings
The resolution said terrorism is a national issue and warned against using it for political point-scoring.
It called on the federal government to take action under Article 6 in accordance with the Constitution and law.
The assembly also urged Maryam Nawaz to withdraw her remarks and apologize, according to reports.
However, the resolution itself does not establish any legal violation by Maryam Nawaz. Any proceedings under Article 6 would require the relevant constitutional and legal process.
Political Tensions Between Provinces
The debate reflects growing political tensions between the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments over terrorism and security.
KP lawmakers said the province has suffered heavily from terrorism and rejected attempts to place responsibility on the province alone.
They called for national unity and a joint approach to counterterrorism.
A separate report also said opposition members raised questions about the assembly’s quorum during the session. Despite those objections, the proceedings continued and the resolution was passed.
