WASHINGTON,— US President Donald Trump said Friday that he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
Trump announced the move in a post on his Truth Social platform. He accused the three outlets of repeatedly reporting what he called “fake news,” “fiction” and “lies.”
Trump Announces Immediate Ban
Trump said the ban would take effect immediately. He also warned that other news outlets could face similar action.
However, Trump did not identify a specific report or incident that led to the decision. Later, he told reporters the move followed what he described as a pattern of coverage over several years.
The exact scope of the ban was not immediately clear. It was also unclear whether it would cover White House press credentials, access to specific events or other forms of media access.
Reporters from CNN and Politico were still seen working at the White House after Trump’s announcement.
News Outlets Respond
CNN said it stands behind its journalists and their reporting from the White House. The network said journalists have constitutional protections to report without government interference.
Politico also said it would continue reporting on the White House and would defend its First Amendment rights. MS NOW did not immediately comment.
Legal experts have said a broad exclusion could face challenges under the First Amendment. US courts have allowed presidents some control over access to limited-space events. However, wider restrictions on White House press access can raise constitutional questions.
Trump Warns of More Bans
Trump also said other media organizations could face similar restrictions.
The announcement adds to ongoing tensions between Trump’s administration and several major news organizations. His administration has previously changed rules for media access and faced legal disputes over press access.
