WASHINGTON: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on China and the United States to act as partners rather than rivals.
Xi made the remarks in a written statement after arriving in the United States for a state visit at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. Chinese state media outlet Xinhua carried the statement.
Xi said China and the United States are both great countries. He also described the people of both nations as great peoples.
Xi Calls for Stable China-US Relations
The Chinese president said the two peoples have maintained friendly ties for many years.
He added that the interests of China and the United States are deeply connected. Therefore, he said, the two countries can work together despite their differences.
Xi also said China’s national rejuvenation and Trump’s goal of making America great again can move forward together.
According to Xi, the two countries can complement each other. He said this cooperation could also benefit the wider world.
China and US Should Move in the Same Direction
Xi said both China and the United States face an important year for their own development.
He referred to Trump’s visit to China in May. During that visit, the two leaders agreed to build stable and constructive relations between their countries.
Xi said that agreement provided guidance for the future of China-US relations.
He expressed confidence that the two major powers can find the right path for their relations in the new era.
Cooperation Should Remain Central
Xi called for China and the United States to move in the same direction.
He said both sides should build stable relations with cooperation as the main focus.
At the same time, he called for competition to remain measured. He also said differences should remain manageable.

Xi Stresses Peaceful Coexistence
The Chinese president said the historical logic behind peaceful coexistence between China and the United States has not changed.
His remarks came as he began a three-day state visit to Washington. Trump personally welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews on September 23.
The visit is expected to cover major issues in China-US relations. These include trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and other areas of bilateral cooperation and disagreement.
