LAHORE: Punjab Prisons Inspector General Mian Salik Jalal has suspended six officials after a clash between prisoners at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail left one inmate dead and four others injured.
According to the Punjab prisons authorities, the dispute started over the distribution of food after the jail kitchen stopped operating. The clash later turned violent.
The deceased prisoner was identified as Muhammad Ashraf. Four other inmates suffered injuries during the incident. Local reports said the injured prisoners received treatment at Lahore General Hospital.
Six Officials Suspended
Following the incident, IG Prisons Mian Salik Jalal ordered action against six officials for negligence in their duties.
The suspended officials include Assistant Superintendent Zafar Ali and Central Tower in-charge Assistant Superintendent Imdad Rasool.
Chief Warder Irfan Khan and warders Tanveer Hashim, Imran Saeed and Asif also face suspension.
Meanwhile, another report said the officials received 90-day suspensions after an inquiry committee reviewed their roles and responsibilities.
Inquiry Into Prison Clash
The Punjab Home Department had already ordered an inquiry into the clash.
A three-member committee began reviewing the incident and recording statements from injured prisoners and jail staff.
However, reports differ on the immediate cause of the dispute. The IG described it as a conflict linked to the prison food service, while the jail administration later cited missing food utensils as the trigger.
The authorities are also examining security and supervision arrangements at the jail to help prevent similar incidents.
