Tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Spain on Saturday to protest rising house prices, high rents and a shortage of affordable homes.

The demonstrations took place in about 50 cities. In Madrid, government authorities estimated that around 70,000 people joined the protest. Organisers gave a much higher estimate of about 500,000.

Protesters Demand Affordable Housing

Demonstrators in Madrid called for urgent action to address rising rents and evictions. They also demanded more affordable housing and stronger protection for tenants.

The protests came one day after Spain’s parliament rejected two government housing measures. The proposals aimed to strengthen protections for renters and address growing housing costs.

The rejection added to public anger over the housing crisis. The issue gained further attention after the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her Madrid home.

Clashes Reported in Valencia

The demonstrations were largely peaceful across Spain. However, clashes broke out in Valencia.

Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who reached the City of Arts and Sciences. Around 30 demonstrators entered the complex before police removed them.

In Madrid, police also arrested three members of a far-right group after they attempted to reach protesters in Puerta del Sol. Spanish authorities said some members of the group performed Nazi salutes.

Tenants Threaten General Strike

Some protesters carried signs calling for a general strike.

The Tenants’ Union said it would discuss the possibility of a nationwide strike with labour unions. The group has demanded stronger measures to control housing costs and protect renters.

The protests have increased pressure on the government to respond to Spain’s housing affordability crisis. For now, negotiations between tenant groups and unions will determine whether further nationwide action takes place.
