WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize but expressed doubt that he will receive the 2026 award.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is due to announce the winner on Friday, October 9. Trump said he was unsure how the committee would decide.
He also suggested that the committee might not favor someone like him.
Trump Cites Role in International Conflicts
Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize since returning to the White House.
He said he should receive the award for his involvement in efforts involving several international conflicts.
Trump also pointed to a gesture by Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. She gave her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump in January while seeking US support for her political efforts in Venezuela.
The president said he had become involved in eight conflicts since taking office in January.
Nominations for Trump Remain Unverified
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
However, those claims cannot be independently verified because Nobel nomination records remain confidential for 50 years.
Some parties involved in conflicts that Trump says he helped resolve have disputed his role.
Fighting has also returned in some areas, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border, according to Reuters.
Ukraine Peace Deal Remains Unresolved
Trump has also promised to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, but no final peace agreement has been reached.
His administration has continued diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
Meanwhile, the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran has continued to affect global energy markets. Rising energy costs have also become a political issue in the United States ahead of the November midterm elections.
Nobel Peace Prize to Be Announced Friday
The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on Friday.
Reuters reported that other figures and organizations have also been discussed as possible candidates, including Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court and the UN special rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories.
The committee has not announced the winner before the official ceremony.
