Tehran/Washington: A major diplomatic development has emerged following US President Donald Trump’s decision to issue a deadline to Iran, accompanied by warnings of large-scale military action if no agreement is reached.
According to international media reports, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has officially instructed authorities to initiate negotiations with the United States aimed at reviving or reaching a nuclear agreement. The directive calls for opening talks between Tehran and Washington on the long-standing nuclear file.
Iran’s state-run news agency Fars News reported the development, which was later confirmed by the official daily Iran as well as reformist newspapers. However, no details have yet been disclosed regarding the date or venue of the proposed negotiations.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that work is underway to finalize the framework and mechanism for the talks. He said several key points are currently under discussion and expressed hope that the next phases of the diplomatic process would be completed soon. He did not, however, reveal specifics about the content of the negotiations.
Meanwhile, a senior US official, speaking to an international news agency on condition of anonymity, confirmed that US–Iran talks are expected to begin later this week. The official added that Qatar, Türkiye, and Egypt are finalizing arrangements to host meetings between negotiators from both sides.
