United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Pakistan Army Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi, Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
The appointment highlights Pakistan’s continued contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and international efforts to promote peace and stability.
Major General Qazi Brings Extensive Experience
Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi has more than 35 years of leadership, operational and peacekeeping experience in the Pakistan Army and the United Nations.
He has held several senior command and staff positions during his military career. His experience includes both domestic and international assignments.
He previously served as General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division. He also served as Force Commander Northern Areas and held the position of Director General in Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence.

Earlier in his career, Major General Qazi served with the United Nations Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) in Croatia.
His extensive field and command experience is expected to support his new responsibilities with MINURSO.
Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to UN Peacekeeping
Pakistan has welcomed the appointment and expressed pride in Major General Qazi’s selection for the senior UN peacekeeping position.

About MINURSO
The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, known as MINURSO, operates in the disputed Western Sahara region.
The mission was established by the UN Security Council in 1991. Its mandate has included supporting efforts related to the Western Sahara peace process and monitoring the situation on the ground.
Major General Qazi will now assume command of the mission’s military component as Force Commander.
His appointment further strengthens Pakistan’s contribution to international peacekeeping and reflects the country’s continued support for UN-led efforts to promote peace, stability and conflict resolution.
