Indian authorities have demolished a mosque in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after a local court ruled that the structure stood illegally on government land.

According to Indian media reports, authorities asked local residents to vacate and seal the mosque before beginning the demolition. A large police presence was deployed during the operation.

The mosque was reportedly around 70 years old, although some political leaders have disputed its exact history.

Court Orders Demolition

Reports say a local court ordered the demolition last month after declaring the mosque an illegal construction on government land.

The Muslim side challenged the decision. However, the appeal was reportedly rejected, clearing the way for the demolition.

The dispute has since triggered political reactions in Uttar Pradesh.

Indian National Congress parliamentarian Imran Masood opposed the demolition.

Masood said he would approach India’s Supreme Court against the authorities’ action.

He also claimed that the mosque existed before 1911. According to Masood, the Waqf Board was not made a party to the case.

The claims have added to the legal and political debate surrounding the mosque.

Iqra Hasan Raises Allegations

Samajwadi Party parliamentarian Iqra Hasan also criticized the action.

Hasan alleged that authorities placed her under house arrest to prevent her from travelling to Saharanpur.

Her allegation came amid growing political criticism of the demolition.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati also criticized the demolition of mosques in Uttar Pradesh.

She called on the government to stop such actions and resolve disputes through legal procedures.

The latest incident has renewed debate over the treatment of religious sites and the legal status of disputed properties in Uttar Pradesh.
