DUBLIN: US President Donald Trump says the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz will be resolved. He also expects concerns over possible attacks on Saudi Arabia to ease.
Trump made the remarks after meeting Irish President Catherine Connolly during his visit to Ireland.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Trump said the two sides discussed trade and cooperation between the United States and Ireland.
Trump comments on Saudi Arabia
Reporters asked Trump if the United States could help restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The question came amid new concerns about Saudi Arabia’s security.
Trump said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was a good friend. He also expressed confidence that the situation would improve.
“Everything will be just fine,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, Trump said Iran was likely behind an attack on a Saudi oil pipeline.
However, he added that Yemen’s Houthi movement did not want a confrontation with the United States.
Strait of Hormuz remains a key issue
Trump also said the United States had control of the Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway serves as a major route for global energy and commercial shipping. Therefore, a long disruption could affect oil supplies and prices.
Trump further said the war with Iran could end soon after the US midterm elections.
He also predicted that oil prices would fall once the conflict ends.
Regional security concerns increase
Trump’s comments came as concerns over Saudi Arabia’s security continued to grow.
In addition, recent developments in Yemen have added to tensions across the region. Reported attacks on a major Saudi oil pipeline have also increased concerns.
