US President Donald Trump has said the United States and China want to work for the prosperity of their peoples.
Trump made the remarks during a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on Thursday.
He said the two countries have longstanding ties and share important interests. Trump also said Washington and Beijing were working toward a more balanced trade relationship.
Trump Highlights Trade and Security
Trump said he and Xi discussed several major issues during their White House meeting.
The talks covered trade, security, technology and artificial intelligence.
Trump said cooperation between the two countries had produced progress on trade and other issues. He also described his relationship with Xi as one based on mutual respect and the interests of both peoples.
He said the two countries could achieve more by focusing on areas where their interests overlap.
Xi Calls for Cooperation
Xi said he and Trump had reached common understanding on many issues during their talks.
He warned that confrontation between China and the United States would hurt both countries.
Xi called for stronger communication and cooperation. He said the two major powers should seek peaceful coexistence, manage their differences and build mutual trust.
The Chinese president also said China and the United States have closely connected interests and significant room for cooperation.
AI Should Remain Under Human Control
Artificial intelligence was another major issue discussed by the two leaders.
Xi said China and the United States should use their strengths in AI instead of simply competing with each other.
He called for continued dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI. He also said both countries should work to prevent the misuse of the technology.
Xi stressed that AI development should remain under human control and serve human progress.
Formal Welcome for Xi
Xi received a formal welcome during his visit to the White House.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan.
The ceremony included the national anthems of the United States and China. Xi also reviewed a military honor guard.
US military aircraft took part in a flypast during the formal welcome.
The White House meeting and state dinner came as Washington and Beijing sought greater cooperation despite differences over trade, Taiwan, AI and other international issues.
