Pakistan: At least 15 people, including soldiers and police officers, were martyrs in a suicide attack on a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, while security forces killed 12 militants involved in the assault.
According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s military media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), launched an attack on a security checkpoint in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the night of July 23-24.
The attackers initially attempted to breach the checkpoint’s defenses, but security personnel responded swiftly and effectively, preventing the militants from achieving their objective. During the operation, troops pursued the attackers and killed 12 militants who attempted to flee.
ISPR said the attackers, facing heavy resistance, detonated an explosives-laden vehicle against the outer wall of the checkpoint, causing a powerful blast that severely damaged the facility.
The military said 15 people were Martyrs in the attack, including 12 soldiers, two police officers, and one official from the provincial forest department.

A clearance operation remains underway in the area to eliminate any remaining militants, the statement added.
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent years, particularly in its northwestern regions bordering Afghanistan. Security forces have intensified counterterrorism operations under the country’s “Azm-e-Istehkam” campaign aimed at dismantling militant networks.
Pakistani authorities have repeatedly accused militants operating from across the border of carrying out attacks inside the country, a claim denied by the Afghan Taliban administration.
