PARIS, Authorities in France have ordered the evacuation of nearly 60,000 more residents near the city of Bordeaux, as rapidly spreading wildfires continue to threaten communities across southwestern France and neighboring Spain.
According to the BBC, nearly 200,000 people in France’s Gironde and Landes regions have now been advised to leave their homes or move to safer locations as firefighters battle multiple blazes fueled by extreme heat and strong winds.
French President Emmanuel Macron has mobilized the military to support emergency response and firefighting operations as authorities work to contain the fires and protect affected communities.
Meanwhile, officials in Spain warned that a massive wildfire burning near Madrid has grown beyond the capacity of local firefighting teams to control.
Three separate wildfires west of the Spanish capital have merged into a single large blaze, prompting the government to declare a national emergency.
