WASHINGTON,— The United States military announced that American and Saudi Arabian forces carried out joint precision strikes in Iraq against Iran-backed militant groups accused of planning attacks on US personnel and Saudi energy infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was conducted on July 28 in coordination with the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces.
CENTCOM said the strikes targeted Iran-aligned militants that it alleged were directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to carry out attacks against US forces deployed in the region as well as key Saudi energy facilities.
The US military described the operation as a series of precision strikes, but did not disclose the exact locations targeted, the number of sites hit, or whether any casualties were reported.
The statement also did not provide details about the militant groups involved or specify the extent of the damage caused by the operation.
