ISLAMABAD, Britain’s King Charles III has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nirmal Purja, the world-renowned mountaineer and former British soldier, who lost his life in the Broad Peak avalanche in northern Pakistan.
According to international media reports, the British monarch paid tribute to Purja’s distinguished service, saying he had rendered valuable service as a member of the British Armed Forces before achieving global recognition as one of the world’s greatest mountaineers.
King Charles acknowledged Nirmal Purja’s remarkable contributions both in military service and in the field of high-altitude climbing.
Purja, widely known as “Nims Dai,” earned international acclaim after setting a world record by climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in just over six months in 2019.
His extraordinary achievement inspired climbers worldwide and was later documented in the Netflix film 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.

Rescue officials have so far recovered the bodies of eight climbers who died in the avalanche on Broad Peak.
Authorities say search operations are continuing for two missing climbers, although challenging weather conditions and dangerous terrain continue to complicate recovery efforts.
Broad Peak, standing at 8,047 meters, is the world’s 12th-highest mountain and is located in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range.
