TEHRAN, — Iran has said that the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz is directly linked to what it describes as the United States’ failure to honor previous commitments, signaling that the strategic waterway will remain a central issue in ongoing regional diplomacy.
Speaking in an interview, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismaeil Baghaei said Washington failed to permit the restoration of maritime navigation under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and instead carried out military action before the agreed timeframe had expired.
“The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is connected to the United States’ violation of its commitments,” Baghaei said.
Baghaei confirmed that Tehran is holding discussions with Oman regarding a new maritime route but emphasized that those negotiations are separate from any decision concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
He stressed that negotiations with Muscat should not be interpreted as an agreement to restore shipping through the strategic passage.

The Iranian spokesman also described recent U.S. statements and military threats as part of a broader strategy of psychological warfare.
According to Baghaei, several countries, including the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, and Ukraine, have assured Tehran they will not participate in any military action against Iran.
Separately, Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Committee, said international mediators are working to revive the previous memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Its continued closure has heightened concerns over regional security and global energy markets.
