WASHINGTON: Democratic US Senator Chris Murphy has said that President Donald Trump’s war with Iran is weakening the United States while making Tehran stronger, arguing that Washington should seek an end to the conflict.
According to foreign media reports, Murphy said he would support even what he described as a “bad deal” if it could end the war and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Murphy Calls for End to Iran War
Murphy said the conflict should end because each additional day of fighting is increasing the cost for the United States while strengthening Iran.
He argued that the prolonged standoff is also affecting Americans at home as rising costs place additional pressure on households.
The senator said he would oppose providing additional funding for continuing the war.

However, he added that after the conflict ends, he would support efforts to replenish US weapons and ammunition stocks that have been depleted during the fighting.
Strait of Hormuz Becomes Key Issue
Murphy’s comments come as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a major issue in efforts to end the conflict.
The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy and shipping routes. Prolonged disruption has raised concerns over energy supplies and contributed to higher prices.
Murphy said the longer negotiations remain stalled, the higher the eventual cost of reopening the waterway could become.
He therefore argued that Washington should prioritize ending the conflict and restoring commercial shipping through the strait.
Iran Rejects Direct Talks With US
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that Tehran was not engaged in direct negotiations with Washington.
Araghchi also maintained that Iran would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States accepts Tehran’s demands.
Among Iran’s demands is an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian shipping.
The Iranian position suggests that reopening the waterway remains closely linked to broader negotiations over the conflict and US measures against Tehran.
