OSLO: Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89, the Norwegian Royal Palace announced on Friday.
The king died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time on August 28.
King Harald had ruled Norway since 1991. His death ends a reign of more than 35 years.
King Harald’s Long Reign
Harald became king after the death of his father, King Olav V, in 1991.
He later built his own public image as a modern and popular monarch. He also became known for his open style and strong connection with the Norwegian people.

Despite his health problems, Harald did not choose to abdicate. He remained committed to his role as Norway’s king.
Crown Prince Haakon Becomes King
King Harald’s death means his son Crown Prince Haakon now becomes Norway’s monarch.
Haakon had already taken over many royal duties while his father was ill. He also served as regent during Harald’s recent health problems.
The succession marks a new chapter for Norway’s royal family.
