TEHRAN — Iranian lawmakers have submitted a bill seeking the country’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The bill has been sent to Parliament’s Presiding Board. It now needs approval from Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf before lawmakers can debate it.
Bill Calls for NPT Withdrawal
The proposal says Iran gains no benefit from remaining in the NPT.
Lawmakers also cited the war and growing economic pressure on Iran. They argued that staying in the treaty has brought losses for the country.
The bill says Iran should leave the NPT to make independent decisions about its own affairs.
No Final Withdrawal Decision Yet
The submission does not mean that Iran has already left the treaty.
The bill must first move through the parliamentary process. If lawmakers approve it, further legal steps would still follow.
Iran has discussed leaving the NPT before. In March, Iranian officials said Parliament was reviewing the issue after US and Israeli military strikes.
The NPT allows a member state to withdraw under Article X. The treaty requires a three-month notice and a statement explaining the reasons for withdrawal.
Iran Faces Nuclear Pressure
The latest move comes amid growing pressure over Iran’s nuclear program.
Iranian officials have repeatedly criticized international pressure over the country’s nuclear activities. Tehran has also said it does not seek nuclear weapons.
For now, the proposed bill marks a new step in Iran’s debate over its future role in the NPT.
