Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery this week to remove a small nodule from his lung. Doctors discovered the growth during a recent medical examination and detected it at an early stage.
The 71-year-old pontiff shared the news with pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square during his Sunday prayer on October 11. He said the nodule was localised and well-contained. Following medical advice, he decided to have it removed.
Pope Says Doctors Detected the Nodule Early
Speaking to the crowd, Pope Leo explained that doctors had found the nodule during recent tests. He added that they considered surgery the appropriate next step.
The Vatican has not disclosed whether the growth is benign or malignant. Therefore, its nature remains unclear until doctors provide further information.
According to the Vatican press office, the pope’s recovery after surgery is expected to take about one week. However, officials have not released further details about his condition.
Medical Experts Explain Lung Nodules
A lung nodule is a small area of abnormal tissue in the lung. Such growths can be benign, although doctors may recommend further tests or removal when they need a clearer diagnosis.
Stephen Liu, a lung cancer specialist at Georgetown University and head of hematology-oncology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, said surgical removal can provide a definitive diagnosis when doctors have sufficient concern.
The procedure depends on the nodule’s location and the patient’s overall health. However, the Vatican has not shared details about the pope’s individual medical assessment.
World Leaders Express Support
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her support for Pope Leo as he prepares for surgery. She also conveyed the Italian government’s good wishes for the coming days.
Meloni praised the calm manner in which the pontiff discussed his health. Her statement followed the pope’s public announcement in St. Peter’s Square.
Pope Leo Maintains Busy Schedule
Cardinals elected Pope Leo in May 2025. Since then, the 71-year-old pontiff has maintained an active schedule and has spoken publicly about his upcoming pastoral commitments.
His predecessor, Pope Francis, died at the age of 88 after experiencing health problems in his later years.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo plans to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17. Before announcing his surgery, he referred to the planned trip and thanked Catholics for their prayers.
The Vatican has not announced a change to the planned visit. Further updates on the pope’s recovery may clarify whether the procedure will affect his schedule.
