HONOLULU: Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday as it approached Hawaii’s Big Island, US weather officials said.
The storm had earlier been classified as a tropical storm. However, its maximum sustained winds later reached 75 mph (120 km/h), according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane Lala Brings Strong Winds and Heavy Rain
The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Lala was nearing the Big Island with strong wind gusts and heavy rain.
The National Weather Service also warned of dangerous surf and local flooding.
Earlier, an observation site near South Point recorded sustained winds of 41 mph (66 km/h). The site also recorded a gust of 64 mph (102 km/h).

The observation site sits about 550 feet (167.6 meters) above sea level.
Airports Close as Storm Approaches
Hawaii authorities took steps to limit the impact of the storm.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced the closure of Hilo International Airport. It also said Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole would close at 2 p.m. local time.
In addition, authorities closed commercial ports across several islands.
These included Hawaii Island, Maui County and Kaua‘i.
Officials Warn of Flooding and Dangerous Surf
The National Hurricane Center issued its advisory at 10 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time on Saturday.
At that time, Hurricane Lala was bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to the Big Island.
Meanwhile, weather officials warned residents and visitors to remain alert as the storm moved closer.
The combination of strong winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous surf could create hazardous conditions in affected areas.
