ISLAMABAD: Prince Bahawal Abbasi, son of Bahawalpur Amir Nawab Salahuddin Abbasi, has written to Pakistan’s political leadership. He urged them to reconsider the restoration of Bahawalpur as a separate province.
According to the letter, the Punjab Assembly passed a resolution on May 9, 2012, calling for the restoration of Bahawalpur province.
The resolution also supported the creation of a separate province in South Punjab.
Call to Revive 2012 Resolution
Prince Bahawal Abbasi has asked political leaders to revisit the 2012 resolution.
He called for the issue of Bahawalpur province to be placed on the agendas of the National Assembly and Senate without further delay.
According to the letter, the resolution was originally presented by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other political parties also supported the resolution at the time.
Letter Sent to Major Political Leaders
Prince Bahawal Abbasi addressed the letter to several senior political figures.
The recipients include President Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
He also sent copies to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
Bahawalpur Province Demand
In his letter, Prince Bahawal Abbasi stressed the need to reconsider the earlier parliamentary commitment.
He urged the political leadership to take up the matter through Parliament.
Meanwhile, the demand for separate administrative units in southern Punjab has remained part of Pakistan’s political debate for years.
The 2012 Punjab Assembly resolution remains a key reference point for supporters of Bahawalpur province.
