Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar.
Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced his death on Monday, September 7. He said Hassan had been receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan Dies in Zanzibar
Hassan died on Monday morning while undergoing treatment. According to reports, he passed away at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Vice President Ndejembi expressed condolences to President Samia, the family and the people of Tanzania.
He also announced that funeral arrangements were being made in Kizimkazi, in Zanzibar.
Hassan was later buried in Kizimkazi on Monday. Government, religious and political leaders attended the funeral.
Tanzania’s First Gentleman
Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021.
His wife, Samia Suluhu Hassan, became Tanzania’s first female president in March 2021. Hassan then took the historic role of presidential spouse.
He largely avoided the public spotlight during his wife’s political career. Reports described him as a private figure who focused on his family and professional interests.
Hassan had an academic and agricultural background. He was also known for maintaining a low public profile.
President Samia Faces Personal Loss
Hassan married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978. The couple had four children.
His death has prompted condolences from political leaders across the region. Kenyan President William Ruto was among those who expressed sympathy to the Tanzanian president and her family.
The African Union Commission chairperson also conveyed condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania following Hassan’s death.
