LAHORE, — Pakistan Ulema Council Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi has expressed concern over an alleged threat by a Houthi cleric to attack the Haramain Sharifain.
Ashrafi condemned any threat against Makkah and Madinah. He said the security of the two holy cities remains a major concern for Muslims.
Ashrafi Condemns Threats to Holy Sites
In a statement issued in Lahore, Ashrafi said any threat to the holy sites was unacceptable.
He also said the reported threat showed what he described as the intentions of the Houthis. He called for strong condemnation of any possible attack on the Haramain.
Meanwhile, Houthi forces have carried out attacks against Saudi targets in recent days. Reuters reported on Saturday that the Houthis claimed missile and drone attacks on targets in Riyadh and other Saudi locations.
Ashrafi Highlights Saudi Security
Ashrafi also referred to reports about alleged Houthi contacts or agreements with Israel. He contrasted those reports with Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia.
He praised Pakistan’s stated position on the attacks against Saudi Arabia. Ashrafi also said a recent statement by Pakistan’s military spokesperson reflected public concern over the security of the Haramain.
Call to Protect Haramain
Ashrafi said the sanctity and security of Makkah and Madinah were important to Muslims worldwide.
He added that no compromise could be made on the protection of the two holy cities. He also described the protection of the Haramain as a shared responsibility of the Muslim Ummah.
Earlier this week, Ashrafi called for a unified response to threats against the holy sites. He also proposed emergency meetings of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League to discuss regional security.
