WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has confirmed that American forces carried out what he described as a heavy overnight strike on Iran, saying the operation was a direct response to the deaths of US service members amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement, Trump said the latest military action was launched in retaliation for the killing of American troops, adding that the United States deeply mourns the loss of its soldiers.
“We carried out a heavy strike on Iran overnight. The attack was in response to the killing of Americans. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our troops,” Trump said.
The US president added that the fallen soldiers had been fighting to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, describing their mission as critical to American and international security.
The statement came as the US military entered its ninth consecutive night of operations against Iranian targets. Reports indicated that strikes were carried out in several locations across Iran, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Sirik, Hormozgan Province, Bushehr, and Konarak.
No official casualty figures or detailed damage assessments have yet been released by either US or Iranian authorities regarding the latest wave of strikes.
