Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has submitted his resignation, saying he does not want his office to become a tool in political disputes.
Kravchenko announced the decision late on September 7. He called it a conscious political decision and asked President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and parliament to accept his resignation.
“This is a political decision, and I have made it consciously,” Kravchenko said in a statement posted on Telegram.
He also thanked Zelenskyy, the Verkhovna Rada and prosecutors across Ukraine.
Resignation follows corruption investigation
Kravchenko’s decision comes days after Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies launched an investigation into an alleged criminal group linked to fraudulent call centers.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) said the group allegedly protected scam call centers and helped launder millions of hryvnias.
Investigators also searched offices connected to the Prosecutor General’s Office. They detained Serhii Kropyva, a senior official in the office, in connection with the case.
Kravchenko has denied involvement in the alleged scheme. He said his position on the accusations remains unchanged.
Kravchenko had earlier rejected resignation plans
The resignation announcement came only hours after Kravchenko said he had no plans to step down.
Speaking to journalists on September 7, he said he would follow any decision by the president or parliament. He also said he was not clinging to his position.
Later that evening, however, he announced that he had submitted his resignation.
The change came after political discussions about his future. Zelenskyy also met Kravchenko and the leader of the ruling Servant of the People parliamentary faction on September 7, according to Ukrainian media sources.
More changes in Ukraine’s leadership
Kravchenko’s resignation adds to a series of changes among Ukraine’s senior officials during the war with Russia.
The leadership changes have also drawn attention to concerns over corruption and political tensions within the government.
Ukraine continues to fight Russia after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Kravchenko’s resignation now puts further focus on the government’s efforts to maintain political stability while continuing its wartime campaign and anti-corruption drive.
