WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that the proposed US-Saudi civil nuclear cooperation agreement will move forward only if Saudi Arabia joins the Abraham Accords, linking the landmark energy partnership to the Kingdom’s normalization with Israel.
Speaking on the issue, President Trump said the US Department of Energy would approve the civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, but stressed that its implementation is entirely conditional on Riyadh becoming part of the Abraham Accords.
Trump emphasized that the agreement is designed exclusively for peaceful civilian purposes and does not include provisions allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich nuclear material.
He added that the United States has no objection to civilian nuclear facilities that do not involve uranium enrichment, noting that the proposed agreement focuses solely on non-military nuclear cooperation.
According to Trump, similar civilian nuclear cooperation arrangements already exist between the United States and several countries, including Iran in the past, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and other partner nations under peaceful nuclear frameworks.
